Tell us about your job…

I am a senior stylist, so I cut, colour and style hair and I give advice on styles and hair care. I have a number of regular clients who always come to me and I also have one off clients who are happy to have any stylist do their hair for them. You are on your feet all day – even when I don’t have any clients I’ll be on reception taking phone calls, making appointments, taking payments. A big part of my job is still cleaning and tidying between clients to make sure the salon is clean.

I really enjoy meeting people and chatting to my clients. I love giving people a new look and doing a full makeover for someone. It’s lovely when someone new becomes a regular client and I get to know them well.

The biggest challenge is probably the hours. You work every Saturday and late on Thursdays – but then you get Monday off.

I did my Certificate through TAFE NSW. The training is really very intensive and you need intelligence and skill to become a great hairdresser. People also think it’s very glamorous from the start, which it isn’t. You won’t progress through the course unless you are dedicated and work on your skills.

My advice to people considering this career is not to go into this job just because you can’t think of anything else to do – go into it because you think you will love it. It is hard work but rewarding if you are the right type of person. Get your training with a reputable place, like TAFE NSW and then at a reputable salon so that you get the best training possible to make yourself employable. Getting the right apprenticeship can be make or break for you.
