What can a Coxswain do? And what you learn in the course?
A Coxswain can master a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 metres in length and limited to inshore waters (15nm), or become an engineer on a vessel less than 12 metres in length with engines less than 500kW and limited to inshore waters (15nm).
You basically learn how to be safe on the water. So you learn about survival, fire fighting, navigation.
We have a simulator here at TAFE, so we do varied scenarios in class. The simulator can change conditions and locations and then we are tested while operating vessels in those environments.
Then after you could work on a small boat, in tourism, commercial workboats, fisheries, fishing or aquaculture.
How do you get a job?
TAFE are great are the introductions. They are really great at getting their students out there and into roles. From there you just meet people and go from there.
What’s your story? How did you get to study at TAFE NSW?
I was originally at university but I decided to switch. The technology is so amazing and the course is hands on.
Would you recommend it?
Absolutely, I love it.
