Inside an agriculture course… We spoke to:
Do you need to have come from a farming background?
Not at all. I did grow up on a property but you don’t need to have come from a farming background to do this course, they teach you everything from scratch. For me, I also did Animal Studies while I was at school through TVET so that gave me a taste for TAFE and the industry.
What does this qualification give you?
You’re doing practical work every week, so you learn a lot pretty quickly. There are hundreds of acres for us to get experience on here – you learn about stock, machinery, soils, pastures and also the business side of it – so the accounting and finance.
When you finish you can be a supervisor or manager in the agriculture industry. That’s pretty broad I know, but you could work on a farm, in an agriculture business managing their process – or it could pave the path to get into agricultural economics.
